TAKE 5 w/ NYC Filmmaker Alex R. Johnson (Pickup and Return @ CAmm Shorts 3-13)

Alex R. Johnson is a Brooklyn, NY based filmmaker and screenwriter. Currently he is finishing up a rewrite of the feature version of his short-film, PICKUP AND RETURN, as well as producing THE JESSE BERNSTEIN PROJECT, a feature documentary for director Pete Sillen. He produces commercials both to pay the rent and to buy baby the occasional new pair of shoes.

1. What's the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
I am currently all DVR, all the time. Just finally saw Kurosawa's HIGH AND LOW - that would be a loved. Hate is a strong word - but I'm happy to say it about BEE MOVIE.

2. What's your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
Currently DELOCATED on Adult Swim but it's only 15 minutes long, so I'll add in any cooking themed death-match show that uses an animated cleaver chop graphic somewhere in their opening credits.

3. How'd you get into filmmaking?
I was positive I wouldn't get into grad school, so after I moved to New York, I volunteered to work on as many NYU and Columbia thesis films as I could. From there I started working in production as a career and eventually started making my own stuff.

4. What's your fave piece of gear?
Gaffer's tape, hands down. Crosses over into non-filmmaking life nicely, and it's easy to steal from sets.

5. What's the one thing you'd warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?
Don't start shooting without having a reading of your script - either open to the public or just between you and your actors. You need to hear how the dialogue sounds outside of your own head.
