Take 6 with Camm Cage Intern Eric Gonzalez

1. What's the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
I was recently reintroduced to Chris Marker. The first time I heard of him was while in school in my art matters class. He did San Soleil, one of the most beautiful and longest documentaries I've seen. It was La Jete, However that really made me love his work. The film was done entirely in black and white stills along with a narrator. It's plot was recently adopted in Twelve Monkeys.
I haven't really seen anything that I really hated lately. There have been some that were better than others but nothing I'd say I hated.

2. What's your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
Anastasia

3. What kind of films do you make?
I like to make films that use a lot of symbolism in them. I like to lure my audience with the imagery and then make them really think about what that image or images mean in relation to the characters and to themselves.

4. How'd you get into filmmaking?
I've always been into making things, all kinds of things. I went into my undergrad as a declared sculpture major with a concentration in photography. I decided to take a video class as an elective my sophomore year and was hooked for life. I've always been the type to want to get my hands into everything and in film I can do that. I can manipulate every single aspect of the piece to best convey whatever it is I want to say. It is also one the best way to reach a larger audience than a gallery piece would and that is also something very important to me. I still make and enjoy work designed for a specific space but I love the freedom and portability that film and video offer.

5. What's your fave piece of gear?
I don't really have one as of yet. I'm really excited to work with an HD camera again and hopefully I'll get to do that here. Then maybe I can say its the Panasonic HVX200.

6. Why did you decide to do an internship at Creative Alliance Movie Makers? What projects have you been working on here?
Being ejected out of art school into the real world with no resources or access to equipment or a community really sucks. I wanted to surround myself with people doing the same thing I was and from whom I could learn a thing or two. I've been given access to the equipment here and I plan on shooting my next piece in December. I'm really excited about it.

Here's a clip from one of Eric's videos, The Carnivorous Instinct.

Eric Gonzalez Bio:
Eric Gonzalez currently resides in Baltimore MD. via Houston Tx. He recently graduated from MICA, majoring in general fine arts with a concentration in photography. Take 5 Interview with Kelley Baker!

1. What’s the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?

I loved NorthFork by the Polish Brothers. I watched it back to back I was so wowed by it. I can’t tell you what it’s about exactly, but I loved it. I also loved The Hand That Rocks The Barley.

As far as hating any movies, I can’t stand anything by Lucas, Spielberg, or Michael Bay so I don’t even bother watching their movies anymore. I thought Once was over rated, but I can’t really think of anything I have seen recently that I hated.

2. What’s your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?

This is embarrassing, as it is supposed to be I guess, I am a sucker for Dirty Dancing. It might be because I can’t dance, and I went to school with a girl who looked like Jennifer Grey and I had a wicked crush on her. I have seen it too many times to count. I don’t have a TV so I am not current with any of the TV shows.

3. How’d you get into filmmaking?

I have always loved movies, I watched a lot of them growing up. I never thought a kid from Portland Oregon could make a living making movies but here I am. I went to USC’s Film School and left LA to make Independent Films. 25 years later I am still doing it.

4. What’s your fave piece of gear?
C-47s. I can’t imagine doing any film without lots of C-47s.
I don’t think of filmmaking in terms of gear, it’s all interchangeable to me. A camera is a camera and it doesn’t matter what type, what matters is what you do with the camera. I am like the most un-equipment kind of filmmaker.
After C-47s my favorite piece of gear is probably my lap top, that’s what I use to write my films with.

5. What’s the one thing you’d warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?

Don’t make something you can’t pull off within your budget. I see too many filmmakers trying to do these huge complex things on their first film. Make your first film as simple as possible, you would be amazed at how complex even making a simple film is. Practice your craft and do something tougher on your second and third films.
Also, don’t go in to debt. I ended up losing my house because of debts incurred in making my first feature. The IRS does not have a sense of humor.

Kelley Bio

Kelley Baker has written and directed 3 full-length films (“The Gas Café”, “Kicking Bird” and “Birddog”) and was the sound designer on six of Gus Van Sant's feature films including, “My Own Private Idaho”, “Good Will Hunting”, and “Finding Forrester”. In addition, Baker designed the sound on Todd Haynes feature film, “Far From Heaven”.

Kelley has written and directed 8 short films which have aired on a variety of channels including PBS, The Learning Channel, and Canadian and Australian television. His films continue to be shown at Film Festivals like London, Sydney, Annecy and Edinburgh, Sundance, Chicago, Mill Valley and Aspen.

Kelley attended the University of Southern California's "Famous Film School”, where he received a BA and an MFA in Film Production. He did post-graduate work at the American Film Institute. This and four bucks gets him coffee at Starbucks.

Kelley is currently promoting and distributing his short and feature films. His book, The Angry Filmmaker Survival Guide Making The Extreme Low Budget Film will be out shortly. Kelley has spent the last six years touring the U.S. teaching his subversive brand of filmmaking at workshops during the day and showing his films to audiences at Art House Theaters and colleges in the evenings.

Jaimes' Tips for Better DIY Filmmaking!

6 Tips for Better DIY Filmmaking!

1. Shorter is better.

You can make your movie as short (or long) as you want- but people who watch the movie are going to remember the content, not the necessarily the length of your movie. It’s more important to convey a strong idea in a concise manner than it is to show every detail of your idea. Edit out parts of your movie that are not important to the plot or idea you are talking about- this will keep your audience interested and engaged!

2. Show, Don’t Tell.

Some things are best left to interpretation—generally, the audience doesn’t want to be told how to think or feel about things. This rule applies to any kind of movie from fiction to documentary. If a character in your story is really excited, don’t just have them say “Wow, I’m really excited”- show them doing something that communicates that visually!

3. Shot Structure

You always have one more actor than you think on your movie set—your camera! Make sure to have a wide variety of shots in your movie- what the camera does throughout the film can help to develop a strong storyline/idea. Be sure to get coverage with wide shots, medium shots and close ups. There’s a lot of theory about shot structure out there. Check out our resources section for more detailed information.

4. Plan, Plan, Plan!

It’s a good idea to get as much pre-production work done as possible before you start shooting. Here’s a list of a few things that will make your filmmaking run more smoothly! In addition to the things listed below, you may need to think about location, auditions and getting crew members. You can find more information about pre-production in our resources section at the end of this handout.

Script- Writing a script, even for the most simple movie, will help you get a better idea of what you r movie will be like.

Storyboard- Once you have a script, you can start planning your shots. It’s good to plan a variety of shots and angles to keep your movie visually interesting.

Shot List- A shot list is used during production to keep track of all of the shots that are outlined in your storyboard.

5. WTF, L?

WTF, L? (or what we call What The Freak, Larry?) is a trick for remembering four basic things while you are shooting your movie.

White Balance- White balance is the way that video cameras read the hue of light. Basically, when you look at something white through the camera, it should look white! It’s a little different on all cameras, so check the user manual for your camera if you are not sure how to change the white balance.

Tripod- Make sure the tripod is balanced and that the camera doesn’t look skewed (unless you are doing it on purpose) when you look through the viewfinder.

Focus- Imagine realizing that the best footage you have ever shot was just a little out of focus! Sometimes it’s hard to tell if things are in focus when all you have is a small screen/viewfinder.

Video- For video cameras, you can zoom in what you are focusing on, set the camera to auto focus, and once the camera focuses, set the camera to manual focus. This should lock the focus.

Film-For film cameras measure the distance from the lens of the camera to where you want to focus with a measuring tape.

Lights- Check the lighting in your camera’s viewfinder one last time before you start to shoot!

6. Editing Tips

Some general rules to consider while editing:

Cut on the action- You don’t have to wait for the action to end before you cut to the next shot- in fact- most editors cut just before the action is over. The human brain automatically fills in the action that is not portrayed, and it makes for a faster paced movie!

The Kuleshov Effect- Two images that don’t seem to have anything to do with each other can be edited together, and the human mind processes them as being together. For example, imagine a person’s face looking down at something, then an image of a cupcake. It may seem like these two images don’t have anything to so with each other, but when they are put together, it would seem like the person is looking at the cupcake!

Color Correction and Audio Adjustment- If you plan on doing color correction and audio adjustments to your movie (highly recommended), do this last! Make sure you have the movie cut the way that you like it before you start these processes, it will save you some work!

Take 5 w/ Filmmaker Pierre Bennu

Exittheapple has been creating award-winning and thought-provoking film and video projects since 1992. Director Pierre Bennu is a 2001 New York Foundation for the Arts film fellow, and earlier this year, the trailer for Red Bone Guerillas won 2nd place in the ABTV mini-doc contest at adbusters.org.

Meet
Jamyla and Pierre Bennu, and see Red Bone Guerillas Sat Aug 9 @ 8pm @ Creative Alliance!

1. What’s the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
Loved GREAT WORLD OF SOUND. Hated? Well, recently Gus Van Sant did a movie called GERRY. When I meet him there is going to be a problem.

2. What’s your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
Actually I love the The Little Rascals. I hate the depiction of their black characters but I stated watching them at such a young age that I didn’t quite get why it was offensive. Now it's in my brain.

3. How’d you get into filmmaking?
My mother bought me and my brother a roll of 8mm film and said “go for it.” We made an action adventure movie called "The Revenge Of Captain Space Man" and the rest, as they say... etc.

4. What’s your fave piece of gear?
Gaffers tape. You can make cool t-shirts out of it.

5. What’s the one thing you’d warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?
I wouldn’t. What messed me up just might work out great for somebody else. I would actually encourage them to take risks. Mistakes or failure are great teachers and help you find and improve upon your personal weaknesses.

Here's a an animated short created by Pierre Bennu, produced by Exittheapple!

Screening info:
Red Bone Guerillas (Bennu, 2003)
Sat Aug 9 8pm
$8, $6 mbrs.

A documentary filmmaker chronicles the rise of a street theater group called the Red Bone Guerillas, who confront the mainstream media machine with in-your-face tactics designed to shock a complacent public. Shot by then-NYC-now-Baltimore-based African-American husband-and-wife team Jamyla and Pierre Bennu, this faux documentary uses found TV footage and improvisational dialog to explore civil disobedience, group dynamics, and performance art.

Take 5! w/ Chris LaMartina

Chris LaMartina is an award-winning writer/director from Baltimore, MD. His last film, "Book of Lore" was recently picked up by international distribution company, Phoenix Entertainment Group, and he is currently finishing up his new horror anthology, "Grave Mistakes", slated for release in October 2008. Come down to The Patterson Friday night for Book of Lore and a preview of Grave Mistakes!! (Full event info and trailer below interview.)

1. What’s the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?

The last movie that I "loved" would probably be "Deadwood Park", an atmospheric dv horror flick shot by some very talented filmmakers out in Missouri. The film has a very haunting quality and the scope of production is grander than any dv horror I've seen before.

The last movie I "hated"? That's tougher. I really didn't enjoy "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly". I thought the material there was too gimmicky and could have better translated into a shorter film. I know its a true story so I can't be too critical of plot points or anything, but I thought it could have been much better. It just wasn't engaging enough for me.

2. What’s your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
I'm a political junkie. When I get a television with cable in front of me, it's all about C-Span. It drives people nuts. Sometimes, I watch the static shots of the Senate session about to begin. No one's talking. Just classical music and shuffling Senators. There's something bizarrely comforting about it.

3. How’d you get into filmmaking?
Nothing new here. I was one of those lonely kids who stumbled across the family camcorder and begin screwing around. As I grew older, the stories became more elaborate and I refined my technique.

4. What’s your fave piece of gear?
That I currently own? Hmmm... it's all pretty beat-up and bruised by now. I guess my G5. As for things I don't own any more, it would have to be my old Videonics MX-1. That thing ruled. It was my best friend for years and years before Final Cut. Once, I edited a whole 55 minute slasher film all in-camera, with the exception of 3 VCR edits and MX1's fade function. (Wow. I sound like a total nerd).

5. What’s the one thing you’d warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?
Feeding your crew is important. Feeding your crew expensive food is stupid. Jimmy and I made a big mistake by catering to our every food whim on "Book of Lore". We bought fast food and took actors out to dinner constantly instead of being smart and ordering pizza or cooking. Half our budget, I assure you, went to craft services. Be smart! Don't spend money you don't have to.

Fri Jul 11
Book of Lore (LaMartina, 2007)
w/ preview of Grave Mistakes
& short Soundwave: The Touch (Uhr, 2007)

When Rick’s girlfriend turns up dead, he and his friends stumble onto a chilling encyclopedia of local murders called the Book of Lore. Baltimore native LaMartina’s film is a tribute to 1980s horror flicks like Fright Night. Winner of Shocker Fest’s Best Horror Feature, shot for under $8K and featuring the voice of “Godfather of Gore” Herschell Gordon Lewis, it is a frightening tour-de-force of low-budget ingenuity. Plus preview shorts from LaMartina’s upcoming feature and Gabe Uhr’s viral hit Soundwave: The Touch, viewed over one million times online, featured on VH1 and in USA Today. $2 Bloodies on sale at the bar! 8pm. $8, $6 mbrs.
