Take 6 Interview with CAmm Intern Ty Trapps!

Ty Trapps, our latest CAmm intern, is a student at Capital College in Laurel, MD. Learn more about Ty, and take a look at some of the many projects she has worked on below!

1. What's the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
The last movies I loved were “The Kids Are All Right” and the “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and the last movie I hated was “Sex and the City 2”.

2. What's your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
“Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle”.

3. What kind of films do you make?
Documentary, dark comedy and music videos. I shot and edited a film this summer in California called “Black Rollers” about the African-American skateboard community in San Francisco and L.A. I also recently produced and directed films for the Baltimore 48 Hour Film Festival and the 29 Days Later Film Festival.

4. How'd you get into filmmaking?

I spent a lot of time at the movie theater growing up (only child syndrome!) and I always studied what I liked and didn’t like about the movies I watched and thought how I could make it better. I think the backlot tours at MGM Studios and Universal in Florida helped too.

5. What's your fave piece of gear?

Video camera, I like shooting.

6. Why did you decide to do an internship at Creative Alliance Movie Makers? What projects have you been working on here?
I started to come for the screenwriters meetings and really liked the vibe of the place. I also wanted to get more experience in filmmaking. I just started here, but my first project is a short commercial for the Camm Cage.

Take 5 with Healing Neen Editor and Producer Thom Stromer

Healing Need premieres Thu Apr 29 at 7pm. Thom produced the film, with Laura Cain. We kick off the screening with a live set from Caleb Stine (who also scored the flim.)

1. What’s the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?

Last movie Loved: “We Live in Public” directed by Ondi Timoner. Chaos, ego, drugs, sex, guns, voyeurism, technology…what’s not to love?

Last Movie Hated: “Seven Signs” directed by J.D. Wilkes. For the record: I LOVE J.D.WILKES as lead singer for Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers… However, I feel his skills as a Director are severely lacking particularly in terms of Directing in the edit room. He stated that “Seven Signs” would be a response to “Searching for the wrong eyed Jesus” which was a documentary that I truly loved so my expectations were really high.

“Seven Signs” was ok but it completely fell apart in the final 10 mins. He slapped together a hokey montage with Slim Cessna’s Auto Club in the background that tied nothing together and served as an amateur attempt at finishing a film. It felt like a dick tease.

2. What’s your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
My wife Carolyn got me into “Project Runway”. I love our heated discussions about the designs and the personalities and also we discuss how the show is edited.
I enjoy watching the designers at crunch time. It reminds me of the rush of pulling things out of your ass in the last seconds of an edit session just before a crushing deadline.

3. How’d you get into filmmaking?
I wanted to be an audio engineer. I went to school for that and video. I found out I suck at audio engineering. I pivoted to video. End of story.

4. What’s your fave piece of gear?
It sounds lazy but if you are an editor you will understand - my chair.

Due to the fact of how many hours I am in a chair editing, I need a chair that comforts and cradles my buttocks but helps keep my posture straight.

I also need a chair in which I can thrash around, bounce up and down, and spin while screaming. I go into spastic fits and roll about the room throwing myself into walls muttering obscenities and trying to make myself dizzy. It helps break up the day and I find glimmers of insight in those fits.

5. What’s the one thing you’d warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?

Well, It is the MOST difficult thing to do as a new OR experienced filmmaker. That is - NOT DOING TOO MANY JOBS AT ONCE.

We all are control freaks, we all have vision, we all want perfection But you can’t do it all by yourself. You need to let go of your ego and find other people more qualified to handle the big jobs you aren’t good at. You need to focus on one or two of your strongest skills and hand off the rest.

Take 6 Interview with CAmm Intern James Berbert!

1. What's the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
The last movie I loved was Mother Night and the last movie I hated was probably Inglourious Basterds.

2. What's your guilty pleasure movie or TV show?
I have no guilty pleasures. I'm not ashamed of anything that stimulates me, but I do recognize my quasi-addiction to ABC's Lost is pretty silly. Sure is poorly shot and totally nonsensical, but it's so compelling! Close ups, strategically places cuts, screeching violins...it's no less an epic of modern civilization than Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey were to the ancient Greeks.

3. What kind of films do you make?
I have made a PSA for FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement), an animal rights organization that promotes veganism and takes an abolitionist stance concerning the use and consumption of animal products.

4. How'd you get into filmmaking?
I saw Clerks by Kevin Smith.

5. What's your fave piece of gear?
The tripods. They don't get enough love.

6. Why did you decide to do an internship at Creative Alliance Movie Makers? What projects have you been working on here?
I was disillusioned with the institution of higher education, but I still wanted to still purse the world of video and film. My video professor at the time highly recommended that I apply for an internship to Creative Alliance, and so I did, and now I'm answering these questions. Here at Creative Alliance I make short videos promoting artists and their shows here at the Patterson. They're all on our YouTube page. http://www.youtube.com/cammcage

James Berbert, in addition to interning at Creative Alliance Movie Makers, is an animal rights activist. He recently helped to produce this video for Meatout:

How To Make a Film in 13 Short Steps

By Kristen Anchor, Dir. of Creative Alliance MovieMakers, a great resource in Baltimore for film equipment, networking, workshops and diy film screenings

Prep work, prep work and more prep work.  Most of the work on a film happens way before the camera rolls.  (Of course many brilliant people have broken this rule but I'd bet that everyone like Lars Von Trier who breaks the rules is lying a little bit about how spontaneous they are and anyway most have made a few films with LOTS OF PLANNING before they experimented.)

1. Watch lots of movies.

2. Watch more movies. Look at how the shots and cuts tell the story. Notice how most films are not shot with one camera on a tripod on the other side of the room. Take notes on your favorite films.

3. Make friends with people making films. They might have gear and they will need your free labor. You'll learn a ton if you keep your ears and eyes open.

4. Make lots of friends. You're gonna need people who like to do stuff for you. Help people move heavy objects and build your karma.

5. Get an idea or find someone with one. There's no shame in working with a writer if you are more of a director, or the other way around.

6. Have somebody who is not involved in the writing look at your concept or script  and then (and this is the VERY IMPORTANT PART) has hard as it may be, listen to them. Turn off defensiveness and listen up.

7. Ask someone else to look at it and repeat step six.

8. Pull together your resources and your friends' friends' resources -- this means people you know who can act, lift stuff, hold stuff, cook stuff, people with film skills to work on your movie, people with the gear to work on your movie, etc.

9. LIGHT YOUR DAMN MOVIE, it will look a million times better.

10. USE A BOOM AND MIC and a sound guy or gal if you can find one - BAD SOUND IS WHAT MAKES OR BREAKS A FILM.

11. Use an editor. It is a rare person who can distance themselves enough from the project they are directing to be a good editor. You are still the 'boss' of the editor, so it isn't so bad, but really, listen to them.  They are going to want to cut stuff you are very attached to, but it WILL make your film better.  Let go, you can do it!

12. Have a big premiere!  Do it up right!

13. Don't be discouraged by film festival rejections  you need to get started on your next film anyway!

CAmm announces 2010 CAmm Fellow, Miguel Sabogal!

Creative Alliance MovieMakers announces filmmaker Miguel Sabogal has been chosen CAmm Fellow of 2010! One CAmm Fellow is chosen each year to receive extended free use of CAmm Cage gear, the CAmm Media Lab, and editing suite. Miguel Sabogal is an indie filmmaker calling Baltimore home. He worked as a scientist for years and recently made the leap to filmmaking , and earning a Post-Baccalaureate at MICA.. His hypnotic, otherworldly experimental narrative films have screened at the Maryland Film Fest, Hampden Film Fest, and MICA. Sabogal is also co-founder of The Hexagon, a vibrant indie film/music venue in the burgeoning Station North Arts District.

"We are really excited to have Miguel as our new Fellow" says CAmm Director Kristen Anchor. "He is a filmmaker with the emphasis on FILM. He works in good old 16mm film, the real thing at a time when fewer and fewer people do." As part of the Fellowship CAmm will premiere Sabogal's film, a feature length period film, set in 1930’s depression-era Baltimore, about a teenage boy and his mysterious uncle, he will create during his fellowship. Sabogal will utilize CAmm’s collection of 16mm cameras and sound gear to shoot the film.

Creative Alliance’s CAmm Fellowship promotes growth and expertise in filmmaking and time-based media arts of all genres by encouraging the development of finished, professional film, video and media arts projects. Each year CAmm awards one Fellowship to a filmmaker or artist working in time-based media living and working in Maryland, for a specific film/video project planned for completion in that year. Fellows receive extended free use of CAmm Cage gear, the CAmm Media Lab, and editing suite. The Fellowship also includes a work-in-progress critique with established members of the film community (determined by the subject and format of the project), a public artist talk midway through the project, and concludes with a screening opportunity at The Patterson.

SEEKING EIGHT ACTORS
Casting to be done week of the 18
Gold Marketing Group, an event company in Minneapolis is looking to hire some actors for an event that are presenting in Baltimore on February 12 and 13. We are looking for 8 actors, four men and four women. We are looking for people aged 25-45, no race restrictions. We would need them both Friday and Saturday for 8 hours per day.

A little about the event: The costumed actors will be hanging out in heavily trafficked areas of Baltimore, hip locales, coffee shops, the harbor, etc. acting as typical couples. Due to the nature of the costumes (a bird and a bee) the public will ask “what’s going on here?” The actors will then provide a few key messages and information regarding our client’s project, (which has to do with fertility options). Actors won’t have to do a lot of speaking as we have informational cards that they will hand out with more specific information.
