CAmm announces 2010 CAmm Fellow, Miguel Sabogal!

Creative Alliance MovieMakers announces filmmaker Miguel Sabogal has been chosen CAmm Fellow of 2010! One CAmm Fellow is chosen each year to receive extended free use of CAmm Cage gear, the CAmm Media Lab, and editing suite. Miguel Sabogal is an indie filmmaker calling Baltimore home. He worked as a scientist for years and recently made the leap to filmmaking , and earning a Post-Baccalaureate at MICA.. His hypnotic, otherworldly experimental narrative films have screened at the Maryland Film Fest, Hampden Film Fest, and MICA. Sabogal is also co-founder of The Hexagon, a vibrant indie film/music venue in the burgeoning Station North Arts District.

"We are really excited to have Miguel as our new Fellow" says CAmm Director Kristen Anchor. "He is a filmmaker with the emphasis on FILM. He works in good old 16mm film, the real thing at a time when fewer and fewer people do." As part of the Fellowship CAmm will premiere Sabogal's film, a feature length period film, set in 1930’s depression-era Baltimore, about a teenage boy and his mysterious uncle, he will create during his fellowship. Sabogal will utilize CAmm’s collection of 16mm cameras and sound gear to shoot the film.

Creative Alliance’s CAmm Fellowship promotes growth and expertise in filmmaking and time-based media arts of all genres by encouraging the development of finished, professional film, video and media arts projects. Each year CAmm awards one Fellowship to a filmmaker or artist working in time-based media living and working in Maryland, for a specific film/video project planned for completion in that year. Fellows receive extended free use of CAmm Cage gear, the CAmm Media Lab, and editing suite. The Fellowship also includes a work-in-progress critique with established members of the film community (determined by the subject and format of the project), a public artist talk midway through the project, and concludes with a screening opportunity at The Patterson.

Official Rejection
A film about film fests!
Once you’ve finished your movie, you can just “take it to Sundance,” right? Maybe not! Finding placement at a major film festival is often more daunting and exhausting than making your movie. Follow Paul Osborne and Scott Storm as they take their indie film Ten til Noon through the circuit for a lighthearted but realistic look at the politics, pitfalls, costs, and emotional toll exacted by today’s film fest landscape. Note: No shorts this month! Dir. Paul Osborne, 2009, 107 min. 7pm Networking. 8pm Screening. $8, $6 mbrs.

Thu Mar 11
CAmm Indie Premiere:
UnderExposure w/ Hometown Baghdad
New films from Baghdad by Baltimore refugee filmmaker Ziad Jazzaa
Award-winning Iraqi filmmaker Ziad Jazzaa fled Baghdad as a refugee and was resettled in Baltimore in 2009. Tonight we screen his feature UnderExposure with a cast of fictional characters set in war-torn Iraq: a determined filmmaker, a poet weak with cancer, a wounded soldier. Shot during the Iraq War, with real footage of Baghdad, a city in rubble yet filled with compassion and perseverance, it won Best Film at Singapore’s International Film Festival 2005. Shorts from Hometown Baghdad open. Dir. Oday Rasheed, 2006, 74 Min. Q&A w/ Jazzaa follows. 7pm. $10, $8 stus, mbrs.

Fri Mar 26
CAmm Indie Premiere: Going All Pro!

Fancy Clancy guides us through the little-known world of stadium vendors, who perform with the same intensity and competitive pressure as the athletes on the field–as he sprints the steps of Camden Yards and Ravens Stadium and runs the entire vending operation for the D.C. Nationals. Witness Clancy’s tricks of the trade: heckling the crowd, running tabs for the Baltimore faithful and dealing with the cast of eccentrics that gravitate to such a hustle—Shakey, the dancing vendor, a would-be-writer, an ex-accountant, an investment banker, and now Clancy’s own son, who hawks bottled water. Discussion with Fancy Clancy and filmmakers follows. Dir. Charles Cohen, 2009, 41min. 7pm $8, $6 mbrs.
