Take 5 with Madsen Minax, Director, Riot Acts (Screens at Creative Alliance Fri Dec 4, 8pm)

Madsen Minax Director/Co-Producer, Editor Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance

Madsen’s work is primarily in time-based arts, including sound/music and film/video, but when he’s not making films, writing songs, or singing and playing bass in the band/collective Actor Slash Model, he survives in the real world by editing educational films, serving coffee drinks and giving mediocre tattoos out of his basement. Madsen co-curates bi-monthly screenings as Threat Level Queer Shorts, bringing queer films and videos to exhibition space and building a fresh and necessary queer artists' space in Chicago. Madsen has toured the country several times over in Actor Slash Model and His films have screened internationally. Meet Madsen and check out the film at Creative Alliance Dec 4. Reception 7pm. Film 8pm. $10, $8 mbrs & stus. Soup dinner sold sep. Reception with filmmakers, live performance by The Degenerettes, Jessica Xavier, and soup dinner precedes the screening and Q & A with the filmmakers follows.

1. What’s the last movie you loved and what was the last movie you hated?
the last movie i absolutely hated was "Big Gay Musical." the last movie i loved was black stallion. what can i say, i just re watched it when i was sick and what's more magical than a half naked boy on a horse?

2. What’s your top secret skill nobody knows about?
i make a stellar house boy.

3. How’d you get into filmmaking?
my interest in sound design lead into filmmaking, as i was primarily interested in how music and audio were relating to moving images.

4. What’s your fave piece of gear?
i'm not much of a gear head. whatever is readily available is my fave.

5. What’s the one thing you’d warn a new filmmaker NOT to do on their first film?
don't use any transition that's not a dissolve. please. just don't do it.

Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance
Gender queer rockumentary road movie w/ The Degenerettes, Katastrophe, The Cliks, + more

Dir. Madsen Minax, 2009, 72 Minutes. Reception 7pm. Film 8pm. $10, $8 mbrs & stus. Soup dinner sold sep.

In 2006, Simon Strikeback and Madsen Minax (of the Chicago bluegrass band Actor Slash Model) packed their instruments and cameras and struck out on the road. For 3 years, they travelled the U.S shooting 15 bands (including The Degenerettes, CAmm Dir Kristen Anchor’s band) and dozens of individuals performing, living, and discussing songwriting, venues, media representation, passing privilege, and the politics of gender identity. In a media climate where most images of transpeople are at best as victims and at worst as “freaks,” Riot Acts is radical departure -- no victims; just real people living interesting lives and making music. (The film also features appearances by CA staffers Megan Hamilton, Brittney Huff, and Dawn Swartz!) Reception with filmmakers, live performance by The Degenerettes, Jessica Xavier, and soup dinner precedes the screening and Q & A with the filmmakers follows.
